Under the umbrella of Outmusic, there was a workshop for musicians this last Monday at the Center. But the kudos go to the industrious, bottomless-pit-of-energy Jed Ryan for organizing it and making it happen. Thanks, Jed.
The guest speaker was Phil Putnam, who has done very well for himself in the Indie music world, and was kind enough to offer up some of his hard-earned wisdom. Thanks, Phil.
But...and there's always a but, isn't there? But I was a little disheartened by the emphasis Phil put on keeping an active presence on the internet, not only by keeping an up-to-date website and blog, but also through social networking sites, namely Facebook and MySpace. And of course the new kid on the block, Twitter. It's very daunting. Who has the time?
The real bummer of it is, he's right. One of the workshops I sat in on at the ASCAP New York Sessions said the same thing. Confirmation. Sigh. The thought of keeping up with all of that exhausts me. There just aren't enough hours in the day. I guess we just do what we can. There are only so many hours in the day, and only so much time that can be devoted to any given task. So we soldier on. Do what we can. And hope for the best.
